A full body safety harness is the most common type used in occupational fall protection. Follow these steps precisely every time.
Before putting it on, inspect every component. Look for frayed webbing, cracked or corroded buckles, missing labels, and damaged D-rings. OSHA 1926.502 requires that any harness showing signs of damage be immediately removed from service. Do not use a harness that has already arrested a fall — it must be retired after one fall event.
Grasp the back D-ring and lift the harness. Let it hang freely so the straps fall into their natural position. Shake it gently to untangle any twisted webbing. The two leg loops should hang below, and the shoulder straps above.
Put your arms through the shoulder straps as you would a backpack. Ensure the straps lie flat on your shoulders with no twisting. The D-ring should rest between your shoulder blades at the upper-middle of your back.
Locate the chest strap buckle and connect it across your sternum. Position it at mid-chest level, approximately at armpit height — not at the throat or below the pectoral muscles. Adjust so it is snug but allows full breathing range.
Step into each leg loop one at a time, similar to putting on trousers. Route the loops under your thighs. Buckle each leg loop securely. You should be able to fit exactly two fingers — no more — between the strap and your thigh. If you can fit a full hand through, the loop is dangerously loose.
Starting from the top, work downward tightening each strap. Pull all excess webbing through the keepers (retaining loops) to prevent dangling ends. Ensure all buckles are fully engaged — listen and feel for a positive click on all tongue-buckle connections.
Have a co-worker visually inspect the harness from all angles. They should check that the dorsal D-ring is not twisted, that all buckles are closed, and that no webbing is routed incorrectly. A buddy check takes under two minutes and significantly reduces donning errors.
Half-body harnesses wrap around the waist and upper thighs only. They are appropriate for confined space entry, rope access positioning, and utility line work — never for fall arrest from elevation.
Important: If your job site requires fall arrest protection (i.e., you could free-fall more than 6 feet under OSHA standards), a half-body harness is not compliant. You must use a full body fall arrest harness.
Climbing harnesses are designed for dynamic falls in recreational or professional climbing environments. They differ from industrial harnesses in that they have a belay loop at the front rather than a rear D-ring.
Many modern climbing harnesses use auto-locking buckles (such as those by Black Diamond or Petzl) that do not require double-backing — always read the manufacturer's instructions, as using a double-back buckle system without double-backing is a leading cause of climbing harness failure.
